Teaching was never simply a job for me. For forty-five years, classrooms became places where lessons went far beyond books and assignments. I taught English, but my students taught me just as much about patience, resilience, humor, and the importance of showing up for one another.

Along the way, I was honored to be named Teacher of the Year three times - a recognition I treasured because the classroom and the young people who filled it were at the heart of my life’s work.

Some of my favorite stories - and some of the people I will never forget - came through those classroom doors.

I believed teaching was about much more than English. It was about expectations, encouragement, accountability, and sometimes a good dose of humor. My students knew I expected them to learn, but they also knew I cared about what happened to them beyond my classroom.

Over the years, I learned that some of the most important lessons we shared never appeared in a textbook.
