The Emancipation Proclamation
The occasion that we celebrate began in 1863
When Abraham Lincoln decided he would set the slaves free
But as you & I both know this was simply not the case
His initial proclamation did but little for our race.
In fact old Abe Lincoln didn't believe he had the right ~~
Well~~ to settle the slavery question or make it an issue in the fight.
But proclaim it he did — and it went down in history
Doing nothing at all — to set our people free.
The emancipation proclamation — merely paved the way
For freedom that was to come on a not too distant day.
In the meantime — however, over 500,000 ~~many~~ slaves ran away,
Many fought & died for freedom — the highest price to pay.
But it wasn't until December 18, of 1865
That the 13th Amendment to the constitution was (finally) ratified.
This ended slavery - AND FREEDOM FINALLY WON - ~~as we knew it~~ in the United States
But our problems ONLY CONTINUED & to this day ARE NOT ~~quite~~ done
It's been an uphill struggle — but with God we made it through
And we celebrate this day to remind us that it's true.
